Songs are like mini-operas, and remembering the words is the one part you have to really work on yourself.

To help yourself:

First of all SET ThE STAGE! make sure you know the story of the song and where it is set (in a wood, indoors, in a field etc), who is singing (is it you, are you a character, old, young) and how you are feeling.

– announce the song, and sing the first line of each verse. You will find that you want to start some verses louder than others.

– put in actions at home to help you. (You can take them out when the words come more easily)

– mime the song in actions

– pretend you are a famous actor, and speak the words dramatically as in a play.

– draw your song, like a cartoon, on a piece of paper. (For example, the ‘ Friendly cow’ has three pictures)

– imagine painting a picture, or that your song as a video.

– Doodle, keeping your pen on the paper, whilst you are silently saying the words

– read a verse thro’ silently for one minutes, then sing it

– imagine you are ‘text-speaking’ the song (ie type the words in an abbreviated form whilst mouthing them silently)

– ask a parent, or a friend to act out the first half of the sentence and you the second.

– REMEMBER THAT LAST NEEDS MOST. Practise the last verse first, then the last two, then all three etc (This is because you will be most tired at the end of the song and works really well, not only for songs, but also for Da Capo Arias)
